Sultan of Oman's Visit to UK Marks New Chapter in Historic Relationship , Enduring Friendship: Analysts , Experts

Amr Yehia

The state visit of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, Sultan of Oman, to the United Kingdom has drawn wide attention in international media, including news agencies and world newspapers, which highlighted its political significance and historical dimensions, in the context of the deep-rooted friendship and partnership between the Sultanate of Oman and the United Kingdom.

The visit gains exceptional importance as the first of its kind in more than four decades, described not merely as a protocol event but as a new chapter in the narrative of a historic relationship and a steadfast friendship described as "unshakable" since the treaty of 1800.

From the halls of the University of Oxford to the corridors of the British Omani Society, founded fifty years ago, the bridges of this friendship extend to include youth, scientific research and manufacturing, affirming that the rich history is merely the foundation on which the partnership of the future is built.

Richard Stanford, Chairman of the British Omani Society, affirmed that the state visit by His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq to the United Kingdom is an exceptional tribute to the historic bilateral relations between the two friendly countries, noting the importance of this event in consolidating relations and celebrating the bonds of historic friendship between the two countries and peoples, whose roots go back hundreds of years.

He pointed out that the visit represents a prominent milestone in bilateral relations, carrying an affirmation of continued strengthening of ties and building on their solid foundations while looking to the future, noting that promising opportunities in both Oman and the UK allow for intensified cooperation in several fields, including economic sectors, scientific research, and manufacturing, in addition to opportunities available to youth in both countries.

Stanford said there are joint research programs between Oman and the UK, where university research is transformed into start-up companies, and then that research is put into production, and many of these companies are in discussions with Oman to manufacture locally in Oman technologies discovered in British universities.

He explained that the British Omani Society has been implementing distinguished programs for some time and looks forward to expanding them with support from sponsoring companies, especially in youth development sectors, alongside sports, environment, business and economic development, all of which are based on Oman Vision 2040.

For his part, Professor Eugene Rogan, Director of the Middle East Centre at St Antony's College, University of Oxford, affirmed that the visit constitutes an important opportunity to renew the bonds of friendship and historical ties between Oman and the UK, noting that holding the official reception ceremony at Windsor Castle carries historical and symbolic significance of the deep-rooted Omani-British relations that stretch back centuries.

He said that throughout history, Oman has remained a society open to the outside world, with its geographical and cultural ties extending to South Asia and East Africa, as well as southern Arabian Peninsula, confirming that it is a state built on openness and tolerance, stressing that this culture, rooted in Oman's history as a maritime power, has shaped its place in international relations in the 21st century.

He pointed out that Oman is distinguished by its ability to maintain good diplomatic relations with all parties, and has played a positive and constructive role in steering regional conflicts towards diplomatic settlements. He affirmed that both Oman and the UK respect the sovereign rights of states and believe that conflicts are best resolved through diplomatic means, adding, "We live in an era where many countries resort first to military means to impose their priorities instead of trying to find common ground through negotiation."

He explained that Oman holds a unique position in terms of its relationship with the UK, with ties at the leadership level, at the government level, and at the cultural and civilizational level.

He highlighted the contributions of the Omani approach based on dialogue, tolerance and mutual respect in strengthening bonds of rapprochement and deepening understanding between cultures and civilizations, noting that the attention the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies has received over recent decades from the leadership in Oman reflects the contributions of this approach.

He explained that the Centre includes a chair bearing Oman's name and a hall with the same name that houses all its activities, located next to the "King Charles III Garden." The building and garden are adjacent, so that in the hall itself one finds his Omani colleague sitting next to the holder of the King Charles III Fellowship, as the Centre also hosts visiting researchers from Oman.

He stressed the importance of the role that academic and cultural institutions can play in expanding the horizons of Omani-British cooperation and strengthening ties between the younger generations in both countries, affirming that people-to-people relations and scientific research — with the better understanding of peoples and cultures they provide — should form the foundation on which those relations are built.

Dr. Fouad Abdul Razek, expert in British and international affairs, affirmed that the visit is not merely a protocol visit, but an expression of the depth of historical relations that extend for more than two centuries and have managed to transcend regional and international political transformations. He explained that the visit carries a clear message that historical relations derive their strength not from the past alone, but from their ability to adapt to the present and invest in the future.

He pointed out that this relationship today is based on partnership and mutual interests with respect for political decision-making and the specificity of the foreign policy of both countries, explaining that there is additional importance in light of tensions in the Middle East, where Oman represents a voice for dialogue and de-escalation, while Britain remains an influential party with extensive political, security and economic relations in the region.

He explained that the continuity of Omani-British relations is based on three main pillars, the first being accumulated political trust over long decades, which has helped both countries maintain channels of communication even during periods of regional and international turmoil.

He added that the second pillar is defense and security cooperation, which is one of the fundamental pillars of this relationship, whether through joint military training, exchange of expertise, or cooperation in maritime security.

He said the third pillar is economic and commercial interests that have evolved from historic maritime and commercial relations into partnerships including investment, energy, education and technology, pointing to a crucial factor represented in mutual understanding between the two leaderships and respect for the Omani approach based on balance and non-alignment with axis politics.
