Arab League Welcomes US Congressman’s Call to Release Palestinian Prisoner Marwan Barghouti

The League of Arab States has welcomed the call made by US Congressman Ro Khanna for the release of Palestinian prisoner Marwan Barghouti, saying it aligns with the steadfast Arab position that considers the prisoners' issue a central cause in joint Arab action.

In a statement, the Arab League affirmed that the release of Marwan Barghouti, along with all Palestinian and Arab prisoners in Israeli occupation prisons, is a political and humanitarian demand in itself, which is non-negotiable and cannot be conditioned on the narratives of the detaining party.
The League recalled in its statement that Barghouti is a political prisoner who has been subjected to repeated violations for years, and that the League had previously demanded an end to these violations, the provision of an independent medical visit for him, the opening of an international investigation into the assaults against him, and his release.
The League stressed that any serious path towards a just and comprehensive peace cannot be achieved without enabling the Palestinian people to exercise their right to self-determination, on the basis of international legitimacy resolutions, the Arab Peace Initiative, and the two-state solution on the borders of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
The Arab League called on the international community to translate this trend into practical positions that press for the release of prisoners, foremost among them Marwan Barghouti, and to stop policies of detention, torture and settlement, and create conditions for a credible political process.
