Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Fahmy today paid a field visit to southern Lebanon to assess first-hand the security and humanitarian situation amid ongoing Israeli assaults, and to reaffirm the Arab League's support for Lebanon and its people in facing current challenges.
The visit, accompanied by Lebanese Minister of Social Affairs Hanin Al-Sayed, included the Zahrani area and the town of Zoutar al-Gharbiya, as well as the Lebanese Army Command – Litani South Sector in the city of Tyre, where the Secretary-General was briefed in detail on field developments, continued Israeli violations, and the systematic destruction witnessed in southern villages and towns targeting homes, facilities and infrastructure, in addition to the burning of trees and agricultural lands and the severe damage inflicted on citizens' lives and livelihoods, hampering recovery and reconstruction efforts.

The Secretary-General was briefed on the efforts exerted by the Lebanese Army in performing its national duties under these exceptional circumstances. Army commanders warned of the risks of a security vacuum in the south following the departure of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and its potential repercussions on the security and stability of the region, stressing the importance of strengthening the Army's capabilities and enabling it to assume its responsibilities in the coming phase.
The Secretary-General affirmed the Arab League's support for the Lebanese Army and state institutions, stressing the need to intensify Arab and international efforts to halt Israeli aggressions, end the Israeli occupation of Lebanese territories, and mobilize the necessary support to enhance the state's ability to extend its authority over all its territories and rebuild affected areas.

The Secretary-General expressed his sincere thanks and appreciation to the Lebanese Army and the Internal Security Forces for the cooperation and facilitation provided in organizing the visit, particularly his field tour in the south, commending their efforts under the delicate security conditions in the region.

He stated that his visit carries a message of appreciation for the resilience of the people of the south and the sacrifices of the Lebanese Army, and reflects a commitment to translating political support into effective Arab action, affirming that Lebanon's security and stability is an integral part of Arab national security, and that preserving its sovereignty and territorial integrity is a shared Arab responsibility.
